Artist Interview: “All I Have” by Terra Renae

Q: “All I Have” is vulnerable, eclectic, and powerful. What was your creative process in making this album?

TERRA RENAE: The creative process for this album began with a collection of concepts I developed before collaborating with any co-writers. The idea actually stemmed from a conversation with Macy Gray. In the months leading up to our writing sessions, she encouraged me to start jotting down lyrics and storylines I wanted to include on my debut album. So I did exactly that, writing down every topic and personal experience I wanted to explore, not just for my own healing, but for the listeners too. It was really important to me that this project felt authentic and aligned with my message. During our sessions, we created a variety of musical compositions and wrote to the ones that best evoked the emotions tied to those pre-written storylines.

Q: Did any real-life events inspire the album?

TERRA RENAE: Absolutely, every single song on the album is rooted in my life, some more directly than others.

“Lights Down Low” was inspired by my now-husband Praveen and our evening ritual of dimming the lights and lighting candles after a long day. It’s our way of winding down and shutting the world out.

“Over and Over Again” draws from my single years and the emotional whirlwind of navigating toxic relationships.

“In My Dreams” is about seeing my late father in my dreams. We went through several versions of that song to make it more universal, something anyone who’s lost someone could connect with.

“Stick Around” is based on our love story. I had planned to move to California long before I met Praveen, but I put those plans on hold once we connected. Ironically, we now go to California all the time together for music projects.

“All I Have” reflects the judgment I felt when I made the leap to leave my career behind and fully pursue music.

“Safety Net” touches on my journey as a young girl who gave up her dream of singing after one bad audition, choosing the ‘safe’ academic path instead. The song is about finding the courage to take that leap of faith into the unknown.

“Party in the Sunshine” is all about letting go of what others think, surrounding myself with love, and celebrating the beauty in life.

Q: Do you have a personal favorite on the album?

TERRA RENAE: That’s such a tough one, these songs are all like my babies. Each of them required so much care and intention to bring to life. But if I had to choose, “Lights Down Low” holds a special magic for me. Every time I sing it, it takes me to a place that’s hard to describe. There’s something deeply emotional and powerful in that one that still puts me in a trance.

Q: In your own words, how would you describe the music you typically create?

TERRA RENAEI’d say my music is authentic, vulnerable, and relatable. It’s rooted in real experiences and emotions, mine, and hopefully yours too.

Q: What projects are currently in the works?

TERRA RENAE: This train is full steam ahead! We plan to start releasing singles from Album 2 in April 2025, and we’re gearing up for a European tour as direct support for Macy Gray. On top of that, I’ve already started working on concepts for new material. There are still so many stories to tell, stay tuned!

Q: Any parting words to your fans?

TERRA RENAE: Thank you so much for taking the time to listen. Making music is such a vulnerable journey, and it’s truly part of my own healing process. To know that others might hear these songs, connect with them, and maybe even find comfort or inspiration, that means the world. Keep believing in yourself. Anything is possible.
