“Frisia” by Quicche is a moving indie folk album that blends acoustic instrumentation with electronic sounds, making for unique sonic landscapes that you can’t find anywhere else. Quicche is an innovative artist from Germany, and throughout this ten-track album, he explores a variety of personal experiences and emotions, providing thought-provoking narratives the whole time. The album was made in isolation, and the intimate care that went into its creation is palpable in each arrangement.
After a thirty-second intro track filled with ominous ambience, distorted sounds, and rising tension, the album opens with “Mid 30s HB.” Layered, echoing vocals draw you into the atmosphere as tapping synth sounds keep the rhythm. Unique sonic textures oscillate between your ears and emotional piano grounds the song. From moment to moment, there are constantly new sounds being introduced, shifting the energy over and over. It’s slightly chaotic, yet still cohesive and poignant. Towards the end of the song, dense synths hit big, backed by huge drum crashes and rippling drum fills.
Another standout track on the album is “Red Eyes,” which has a high energy, unrelenting beat that you can feel in your soul. Pretty synths twinkle as a deep, modulated vocal stutters across the arrangement. Much of Quicche’s music is electronic and experimental, drawing on house beats or EDM song forms, but he also draws on folk elements by using enveloping ambience and hints of acoustic instruments. Different styles and sounds weave their way through every song on this album, making for an exciting and captivating listening experience.
