“Insane” by Sean Kennedy is a vulnerable rock pop track that explores how love can dim your common sense and have you running back to someone that has hurt you time and time again. Kennedy is a multifaceted artist based in New York that consistently delivers compelling lyrical narratives and captivating sonic journeys. “Insane” is a single off of his upcoming album, and the heart wrenching emotions of this song, as well as the invigorating production, get you excited for more.
“Insane” opens with plucking acoustic guitars and a thumping kick beat, soon joined by an intimate vocal. This sparse beginning sets the scene for the raw emotions of the story, but it does not stay sparse forever. The full drum rhythm drops in after the first chorus, matching the rising emotion of the narrative. Then, big electric guitars soar through the second chorus. This shift in dynamics from the beginning of the song to the end is one of the best parts about “Insane.” At first, you think you’re in for a calm, reflective track. But instead, the track grows with Kennedy’s tumultuous emotions, becoming chaotic and enveloping.
Lines like “I only like it when it hurts” and “I love it when you hate my guts, I drive myself insane” tell us that Kennedy is not one to run away from a toxic relationship. When you’re in love, it’s easy to overlook how someone may be hurting you. Kennedy poignantly captures the push and pull of knowing you shouldn’t go back, but doing it anyway.
