“Placebo” by Poems is an alt rock track with thought-provoking lyrics and compelling production. Poems, an inspired band from San Diego, explores the prevalence of medication in modern society, and how lots of people rely on it to get through day to day struggles. Many people do function better with certain medications, but it does make you question the state of our current society and the nature of communities if so many people seem to not be able to function without it. Poems displays their unique sense of lyricism in this track, as well as their ability to craft a captivating sonic landscape.
Strumming electric guitar opens the song before a swaying drum rhythm joins in. At the beginning of the verse, the drums stay sparse, allowing the vocals to set the scene for the narrative to follow. Then, the energy jumps up as the drums become more dynamic and the chaotic feelings of the narrator are revealed. Lyrics like “what’s with my mind? It’s needing tremendous care like a child” tell us that he is having some kind of mental health crisis. Other lines like “she’s on my mouth and I wanna relive her, sugar on my pull” reference a reliance on medication that he is unhappy with, but can’t seem to escape.
Atmospheric sonic textures wrap you in the emotion of the song, with pretty harmonies and lilting “ooos” creating the same feeling as a siren call. Electric guitars both twinkle in the background and take over with big chords, offering a dynamic journey from start to finish.
