Review & Press Interview: “Entropy” by Johnny McAndrews

Johnny McAndrews takes listeners on a thrilling, deeply introspective sonic journey with the release of his powerful and compelling new alternative single, “Entropy”. True to its heavy title, the track explores themes of chaos, emotional breakdown, and the natural human decline into disorder. Built around a complex, driving arrangement, McAndrews constructs a moody and expansive soundscape that feels remarkably immediate, raw, and larger-than-life.

The production features sharp guitar riffs that clash beautifully against sweeping atmospheric pads and aggressive, thumping percussion, perfectly mirroring the internal friction of the song’s narrative arc. McAndrews’ vocal delivery is absolutely electrifying, carrying a gritty, passionate charisma that commands the center of the mix and embodies the frustration of facing down personal adversity.

The songwriting is incredibly sharp, clever, and painfully honest, offering up a masterclass in vulnerable storytelling that cuts straight to the bone. Every transition feels entirely purposeful, guiding the listener through shifting dimensions of despair, passion, and ultimate survival. It is a bold, uncompromising piece of alternative art that demands to be played at maximum volume. To celebrate the drop of this heavy-hitting record, the Rising Artist Agency sat down with Johnny McAndrews for an exclusive, behind-the-scenes look into his creative world. Press Q&A with Johnny McAndrews

Q: The title “Entropy” carries heavy themes of chaos, breakdown, and the natural decline into disorder. How does the lyrical narrative and the musical structure of your new single reflect that powerful concept?

Johnny McAndrews: “Entropy” is one part of the mythological universe I’m building in my Theory of Everything project. This song introduces the concept of chaos and disorder, which serves as the villain of the album because it’s an inevitable force that breaks everything down. Across the album’s arc, the narrator is searching for truth and meaning in a complex and confusing universe. As an antagonistic force, Entropy threatens to make the narrator’s search for truth ultimately meaningless because it will all break down in the end. The closer the narrator looks, the harder it is for him to understand the truth he is seeking. One thing I really like about this song is how the vocal chops convey the sense of things breaking apart musically while the production continuously oscillates between tension and release.

Q:Every track has its own evolution from a raw idea to a finished master. What was the most challenging, yet rewarding, part of bringing “Entropy” from a rough draft to the final mix?

Johnny McAndrews: The most challenging part of bringing this song to life was finding the right balance between the electronic dance-pop production and the depth of the song’s meaning. Because the Theory of Everything project touches on deep philosophical concepts and intense interior emotional states, it has been difficult to find that balance at times. That being said, I’m very proud of where this song landed because it brings those philosophical concepts to life with accessible lyrics while still offering a lush and danceable soundscape.

Q: When fans dive into the lyricism of “Entropy”, what specific message or realization are you hoping connects with them the deepest?

Johnny McAndrews: On the first listen, I hope people recognize there’s something deeper happening under the surface of this song that makes them want to listen to it again and explore the Theory of Everything universe further. Beyond that, I hope they connect with the song’s message about truth and meaning being worth pursuing even in the face of cosmic forces that threaten to undo the entire universe. There are some other hidden meanings that will reveal themselves after I release the other tracks in the album. I’m eager to see how fans interpret these for themselves.

Q: Let’s get personal so the fans can get closer to you! What is a quirky or unusual habit that you have when you’re in the middle of your songwriting or creative process?

Johnny McAndrews: Something I think makes my songwriting unique is that I use individual tracks to create symbols that recur in other tracks across my discography. This is how I built the mythology of the Theory of Everything universe. So, for this track, Entropy represents the villainous character of chaos and disorder. Other tracks in Theory of Everything reference Entropy as shorthand for that character, which allows me to pack more concepts into lyrics while using fewer words. This rewards my fans for listening closely and fully exploring the worlds I build with my music. I say this is a quirky habit because there have been times where I find myself doing this subconsciously without even meaning to.

Q: If “Entropy” was chosen to be the main title track for a popular anime, movie, or video game franchise, which universe do you think your music would fit perfectly into?

Johnny McAndrews: I think any franchise that features characters who are searching for universal truth or one that is focused on astrophysics and philosophy would make a good home for this track. Assassin’s Creed would be an amazing fit because that universe is always wrestling with free will, hidden knowledge, ancient systems, and whether truth liberates people or destroys them. Interstellar and Black Mirror also come to mind.

Q: Looking ahead at the rest of the year, what is one major goal or “bucket list” experience you are manifesting for your musical journey?

Johnny McAndrews: I’ve been slowly building my fanbase while releasing the tracks on Theory of Everything one at a time, with Entropy being the third track so far. My biggest goal is to have people experience the full Theory of Everything arc the way I imagined it: not just as a collection of singles, but as a world they can enter.
