In the first few seconds, a melancholic tune is played softly on the piano, creating a meditative, somewhat dreamy mood; strings eventually arrive, adding to the already bittersweet atmosphere. Cousins’ emotional vocals, a bit raspy — almost Bob Dylan-like, add to the calmness of the track.
Many of the lyrics in “The Well” are quite nuanced and can be deciphered in different ways. Lyrics such as “I stumble in doubt; and open my eyes; and I’ll see all the joy that I’ve found” evoke feelings of loneliness and nostalgia, while also inspiring hope. These uplifting lyrics could mean various things to different listeners: spiritual love, romantic love, enduring friendship, or family, overall creating personal meaning.
“The Well” was written and produced by Cousins and co-produced by Mike Pappas (Mick Fleetwood). The single was mixed by Jim Scott (Tom Petty, Foo Fighters) and mastered by Steve Fallone (Counting Crows). Contributing musicians on the track include Chris Ranney (Map of The World) on piano and synths; Dan Wistrom (Rich Robinson Band) on pedal steel; Linn Holmes (Eric Gales) on background vocals; and Pappas on bass and acoustic guitar.
