Q: Your sound is so dreamy and manages to incorporate distortion and an edge. What inspired this sound and how do you go about executing it?
LETTING UP: It’s some weird mesh of things I like I try not to be hyper purposeful of what sounds I choose. I have general moods I want to wrap into songs. I dig and experiment with different things until I feel like it fits. It’s probably a very inefficient process and incredibly time consuming.
Q: Walk me through the story behind this song.
LETTING UP: “Gemini” talks about how seemingly impossible and amazing it is when relationships last forever. We know that everything is temporary, but somehow we tie this seemingly never ending existence to our connection with each other.
Q: What is your favorite part about creating music? What is your favorite part about creating music in a band?
LETTING UP: My favorite part is the part that rarely happens. That moment when you find something, be it a sound or a chord change. It’s something that makes you stop and smile inside knowing you’ve found some secret piece of your life puzzle you never knew existed.
Q: What’s up next for Letting Up Despite Great Faults? After your album releases, do you plan to play live?
LETTING UP: We have a song coming out November 5 and the album early 2022. We will do a livestream before year’s end and tour heavily next year. U.S. tour dates for March-May are being set and Japan tour dates will be announced soon. We were also just announced in SXSW’s first wave of artists. So happy to see the festival back!
Q: I’m really taken by your band name. What inspired it?
LETTING UP: It’s a take on a Blonde Redhead song title and is completely self-deprecating. I have so many huge faults so why not just tell everyone?
Q: What do you hope to accomplish with the music you create?
LETTING UP: Obviously, I hope to solve the meaning of life. I’ll let you know if I find it.
