London produces some amazing artists, if you’ve heard good music then it’s safe to assume that they come from the UK. Fearful Symmetry is one of those artists, this group has now made their second album and they show now signs of slowing down. “The Difficult Second” aims to cross musicals boundaries and create something exotic, they want to make something for everyone. Do you think they’ve achieved this?
That’s a big fat yes, this album is built around the compositions by one of the co creators Suzi James, this multi-instrumentalist is joined by vocalist Yael Shotts and drummer Sharon Petrover, these three were able to create a classic rock/progressive sound that you love.
“The Difficult Second” starts with a track that transports you back to the 60s, “Mood Swings and Roundabouts” is abnormally upbeat yet lyrically it takes a different turn. This epic six minute track is the natural cup of caffeine you need to get your day started, it takes you on a journey through the forest and when you exit you’re on the other side of the world.
The self titled track “The Difficult Second” takes an interesting turn, it’s almost as if you’ve switched to this jazzy album. Within the first two songs you can see how the blend and bend different genres, the piano in this track makes you want to grab a partner and start dancing.
After you’ve got done with some swing dancing, you’ll need a refresher, since this album is full of different genres, it won’t be hard to change the pace. “Shifting Sands” is an indian track, something you might not have expected from this group but also this uniqueness is very expected.
To expect the unexpected is to truly understand Fearful Symmetry and how they operate. This is the second album from them and they leave you nothing but intrigued, it makes you drift off into wonderland. “The Difficult Second” is no second choice and not difficult to listen to at all.
As you get through more of the album you’ll come across “Sandworm”, it starts off as a metal/heavy rock track. The pure vocals plus the intensity of the instruments is a perfect combination. It’s almost like a goth rock opera.
You will enjoy every single moment of “The Difficult Second”, let “Warlords” walk out into the sunset. This euphoric fifteen minute track will allow you to drift away as you head back into the forest and thank Fearful Symmetry for taking you on this journey.
