“Ashes” by Joshua Ketchmark has all the markers of a good Americana song. With its breezy 6/8 feel and waves of slide guitar, it just oozes classic country goodness. Plus, Joshua’s songwriting easily stands alone regardless of genre. If you love folk music though, you’re going to love this.
Acoustic guitar and organ start us off, creating a pleasantly organic atmosphere. “Did you give it all you had / To shelter me from all that,” Joshua croons with a gentle rasp. His delivery sits so delicately in the space between each strum, letting the textures breathe and allowing the listener to really focus in on the words. Drums subtly pile in and keep the dynamic build going, culminating in the belted, anthemic chorus. “With these bridges burned, / Do you take it for granted?” he cries a painfully cathartic sentiment. Harmonies bolster the lead melody, making it seem fuller and ultimately more effective. Slide guitar swells in and out, providing that specific, familiar folk sound we all know and love.
Stay tuned for a collection of climactic piano chords and an impressive, high-pitched belt. As the song fades out, background vocals chime the hook one last time and we’re left to contemplate the many intricacies of this poetic piece. Be sure to give Joshua Ketchmark some love on your choice of streaming service or social media platform. You’ll doubtlessly fall in love with his artistry and musicianship! “Ashes” is truly a testament to his talent as a songwriter and a performer.
