North-Jersey-rooted indie rock outfit Water Street has spent the better part of a decade working on their craft and chemistry, growing together throughout the years. Defined by their soulful melodies and embodiment of the Americana zeal, the group projects a larger-than-life personality that casts a shadow over the Appalachians themselves. Their newest single “Overdue” adds another illustrious volume to their already robust legacy as it encapsulates the feelings of the wave of emotions brought on by immediate amorous infatuation.
Beginning with a great deal of energy, the percussion counts the band in as they erupt in a symphony of enthusiasm with optimistic guitar cords driving the emotional tone. Long-flowing instrumental resonance, modern sensibility, and nostalgic embellishments allow listeners to get carried away in the moment and the feelings of sentimentality the song cultivates. The musicality throughout fosters the ideal environment to allow yourself to fall into the headspace of the story, and defines a sense of elation with every verse.
The thematic narrative is clear from the opening line. Delivered by vocalist Dave Paulson, he passionately begins with “Carved your name into a wooden heart, its 3am in my best friend’s car, spilling secrets through the drive-through speaker,” immediately setting the tone for the story and putting us in the minds of the artists. A universal feeling, the artists capture one of the greatest joys in life and allow us to go on a journey with them of feeling an immediate connection and basking in the period where it overwhelms the senses.
