“Portal“ by Dare Wren Smiles

“Portal” is an eclectic acoustic folk album, with elements of pop and rock that up the energy of some tracks while still allowing the intimate core of the tracks to shine through. Throughout the album, intricate guitar playing, mournful strings, and reverberating vocals paint an almost spiritual listening landscape, and at certain points, swaying drums and satisfying bass join the arrangement and work to ground the listener.

Dare Wren Smiles is a passionate band from Canada that hopes to impact more than just the individual listeners of their music. This band has committed to donating the album’s revenue to the RAVEN trust, a charity that aims to “raise funds for Indigenous People’s access to justice.” The themes of nature and connection present in this album feel even more beautiful and authentic when you know how Dare Wren Smiles uses their art for positive change.

The opening track of the album, “Horizons” starts with warm, plucked acoustic guitar and atmospheric, echoing vocals. The tension in the guitar, along with the emotions in the vocal, creates a riveting sonic experience that has you hanging onto every detail. An introspective and ambiguous song, Dare Wren Smiles sings the line “everyone else knows that you can change, do you?” which sets the mood for this reflective album that inspires the listener to examine their own feelings and interactions with the world around them. “Peace” is the aptly named track that closes the emotional journey of this album. With the line “in open spaces, life will grow, clear the deadfall and trust that nature knows,” Dare Wren Smiles offers poignant words of wisdom.
