Getting stuck in a toxic romantic situation is, unfortunately, relatable for a lot of people. When you are attracted to someone, it is easy to start accepting treatment that you don’t deserve, because you would rather have them in a subpar situation than not have them at all. Lyrics like “she’s the liquor in my store, she’s the poison, I want more,” tell us that Renfordt is well aware of the bad situation he’s gotten into, but he can’t seem to help it. He compares this woman to a multitude of vices, including coffee and sugar, almost like she’s an addiction. And though it feels good in the moment, all she really does in the end is make him feel worse, because he knows “her longing will not last.”
Acoustic guitar strumming and steady drums lay the backbone of the song, over which electric guitar licks whine and catchy vocal melodies dance. The Cumberland River Project delivers a poignant and introspective journey through a damaging relationship with this new track.
