Q: “They Promised Us There Would Be Flying Cars” is a unique album title that really stands out. What was the inspiration behind the title, and did it inform the way the album took shape?
YOU ME & KYLE: We’re big science fiction fans, nerds actually. We’ve heard the promise of flying cars since we were kids. Still no flying cars. Plenty of unkept promises. Disappointment. Unrequited love. Every song on this album is about life not being what you thought it would. But Maeve puts the light on someone who is ok with that because just having Maeve today is enough. And the song Flying Cars ends on a hopeful note that those flying cars we were promised just may be around the next corner.
Q: What did you enjoy most about making this album?
YOU ME & KYLE: We talk about this all the time. The thing we enjoyed the most about making this album was the time we spent together making it. We’ve been friends since we met at a Star Trek convention when we were 16. We started playing together shortly after that and began writing songs almost immediately. We each wrote our own songs and brought them to band. But this is the first time we really collaborated in the creation of the songs from start to finish. And the music is better for it.
Q: What has been one of the highlights of your music career so far?
YOU ME & KYLE: Releasing this album, actually. We’ve played well over 200 live shows over the years, but it’s our first album together. We couldn’t be more excited. Giddy, really.
Q: Do you have a personal favorite from the album?
YOU ME & KYLE: That’s like saying which child is your favorite. You can’t do that. But if the other songs aren’t within earshot, we’d say The Side of the Road. Don’t tell the others.
Q: Did any real-life events occur in your life that inspired the album?
YOU ME & KYLE: We get asked that question a lot – a lot. The answer is yes. It’s all inspired by real people, real emotions, real triumphs, real tragedies. But if you’re asking if these songs are autobiographical, that’s a big no. We make stuff up. That’s the job really.
Q: What is coming up next for you?
YOU ME & KYLE: We’re just weeks away from releasing a new single. We’re booking and rehearsing for shows. There’s talk of touring and some big bar tabs. Looks like fun.
