Q: I love the vulnerability of “mess that you made me.” What is the story behind the song?
SAMMM: Years ago, I fell in love with this person. We never dated but he was mine in all those moments of time that I was with him.
One day, I told him that I was moving away because I knew I had to stop seeing him. I always wanted more time with him and every time I saw him, it only hurt me more and more every time I had to leave him.
After I told him that, I went to the gas station and bought my first pack of cigarettes; the kind (I thought) he smoked because I missed him and I had nothing of his to hold on to.
Funny story, I say “I thought” because i’m not for sure he smoked Winston’s. Those were just the kind he had in his room so I assumed but they could have very well been his grandparents cigarettes as he was living with them at the time.
To this day, I still have the pack of cigarettes in my closet and I was sitting in my living room just thinking about that time in my life and how silly it was I did that and realized how disappointed I was in the mess that he made me. So, I wrote a song about it 🙂
Q: Who are some of your favorite artists and all-time influence?
SAMMM: Taylor Swift, Avril Lavigne, and Hillary duff raised me. They are my biggest influences in music. Some of my other current favorite artists include Boy in Space, Nightly, Brakence, BadMoodRude, PeachPRC, St.Finnikin, Lany, NF, Russ, JP Saxe, Julia Michaels, Xuitcasecity, Bazzi, Dermot Kennedy
Q: What drew you into making music?
SAMMM: Music has always been a super important part of my life. I grew up listening to my grandma play piano. She actually taught me how to play as well. I’d say she is a big part of what drew me into making music.
Q: How long have you been writing songs?
SAMMM: I have been writing songs since I was about 8 years old. I would just write random songs about random things haha. I think I wrote my first decent song in high school. I started to take music seriously in 2020.
Q: What would be the favorite song that you ever wrote?
SAMMM: I’d have to say, of the songs i’ve released, “Magic” is probably still my favorite song i’ve written. It’s a really special song to me. Although, “mess that you made me” comes in as a close second.
Q: Are you currently working on anything?
SAMMM: I’m working on some collaborations and I hope to be releasing another single of mine before the next year.
