Review & Interview: “By You” by Heberlein

Heberlein’s “By You” is the first look at her latest EP of the same title. The track dropped on March 25, 2022 and truly showcases the singer-songwriter’s rich voice and talented songwriting. Heberlein says that she is inspired by composers such as Hans Zimmer, James Newton Howard, and James Horner. Add in a little pop and that’s her sound.

With notes of melancholy and catchy instrumentals, “By You” is sure to get stuck in your head for a while. The simplicity of it is what got me. It has got a simple percussion and key sound, but it’s just that catchy. And when the bass drops? Yes, please. The lyrics? They hit differently, but my favorite might be “Fool me once and I’ll be your friend but if you do it twice I won’t pretend.” It adds a bit of sass, I think. And the song ends with a giggle, which might seem odd to most, but it really works here.

Heberlein’s rich vocals match the melancholiness of “By You” quite well. The darker pop vibe is soothing almost. Heberlein definitely has a certain vibe she likes to stick to and I think that it’s great to have a unique sound. Her vocals and range truly are remarkable having listened to her debut “Think About Us” as well as “By You” off her latest EP.

Look for Heberlein’s next EP to drop sometime later this year. Want to be in the know? Be sure to follow her on her social platforms linked below the interview.

Q&A with Heberlein

Q: We absolutely love “By You”! Can you tell us a little about what your creative process for the song was like?

HEBERLEIN: Oh thank you! It’s really nice to hear since it’s always a little bit scary putting your own music out there. This song came straight from my head, so I definitely second guessed myself when releasing this song. You know, lyrics and melodies coming from my own head and mind. There are no guarantees that people will actually like it or even understand it. But that’s the coolest part about writing music, once it’s out there it’s for everyone to adapt into their own life and situations.

By You” is the main track of the EP, By You EP. The EP reflects a healing process after finding yourself in a destructive relationship, where every track on the EP reflects different phases of the healing process. The song “By You” is the angry phase of the process.

Q: If you could collaborate with anyone in the world, who would it be?

HEBERLEIN: My answer to this is very easy, I would love to collaborate with Hans Zimmer one day.

Q: Your vocals are absolutely wonderful. What got you into music?

HEBERLEIN: Wow, thank you for that! Music is something that has been with me my whole life, I basically grew up with tracks from famous musicals that my mum played on repeat. The love and joy for music definitely comes from my mum’s side. Music has always been there for me, during moments of joy, but also during the moments that haven’t always been that easy. Which is probably why I never had like a date or a specific year when I started to make music, it has always been a part of me.

Q: What projects are in the works?

HEBERLEIN: So I released my very first EP , By You EP just last friday April 8th, so a lot of my focus has been on finishing that. During the summer I have some bookings that I look forward to and I also look forward to getting back into the studio and writing some more music!

Q: What three tracks are your dance session must haves?

HEBERLEIN: Oh there are soooo many. But if I have to choose three, I’ll go for the ones that I listened to this weekend.

Losing it –  Fisher

Marea (We’ve lost dancing) – Fred Again.., The Blessed Madonna

I can’t get enough – Benny Blanco, Selena Gomez, J balvin, Tainy

Q: Do you have any advice for anyone looking to break into the music industry?

HEBERLEIN: Never give up, believe in yourself when no one else does and don’t forget to have fun and enjoy the process.
