Review & Interview: “R.I.P (Dead 2 Me)” by Gabriella Stella

“R.I.P (Dead 2 Me)” by Gabriella Stella is the pop-rock anthem you’ve been waiting for. With its genuinely catchy melodies and nostalgic rock instrumentation, this track is the ideal combination of spiteful, ironic fun. Not to mention, Gabriella’s vocals harness that powerful, feminine, early-2000s pop energy we all know and love.

The track begins with a distant, rhythmic guitar which swiftly fades into the forefront of the mix. “Bury what you feel / ‘Cause it’s all too real,” Gabriella utters the first few words of the track with a cool, casual affectation. The chords and instrumentation harbor this quiet anticipation, structured with tight drums and overdriven electric guitar.

As the song transitions to the chorus, the textures thicken. A pleasant guitar riff flows through the background. Full, warm layers of chorus pile on top of the lead vocal. The drums become a bit more open. The melody forms something delightfully repetitive and memorable. It’s got everything you could ever want from a chorus–including a satisfying recitation of the hook. As it comes to a close, Gabriella playfully chimes, “Rest in peace! You’re literally dead to me.” It really solidifies the fierce yet whimsical nature of the song.

The rest of the track employs some more delightful surprises, including some call-and-response-style background vocals and the sound of a phone hanging up as an ending. If you’re looking for a new female-fronted rock artist to support, Gabriella Stella is an absolute gem. Her talent shines through her strong, youthful delivery and organic songwriting.

Q&A with Gabriella Stella

Q: I’m loving the seamless fusion of pop and rock in “R.I.P (Dead 2 Me).” Which aspects of both genres do you strive to embody?

GABRIELLA: I would love to combine pop with some punk/rock aspects to it. I am in love with this new era of punk pop women. I have so much respect for what they are doing and putting out to the world.

Q: Which part of the musical process is your favorite (writing, recording, performing etc…)?

GABRIELLA: I would have to say performing is my favorite part of the process. I get to see the reaction firsthand and see people enjoy my music. When people sing your song back to you; it’s an indescribable feeling. You feel seen when you have gone your whole life not being understood.

Q: Who would you most like to collaborate with, if it could be anyone in the world?

GABRIELLA: Hands down: Miley Cyrus. That woman is truly a legend and how she has evolved is incredible. I love how she is unapologetically herself and is not afraid to rock the boat.

Q: I see you’ve performed at some legendary venues. Is there a venue you’ve always dreamed of performing at?

GABRIELLA: I would love a chance to perform at Madison Square Garden. It is a venue that truly feels like an “I made it” moment.

Q: What’s your favorite non-musical hobby?

GABRIELLA: I love to cook and try new recipes. I am vegan so it has given me a way to experience foods in a whole new light.

Q: What would you like to say to your fans out there?

GABRIELLA: Thank you for being there for me and supporting me with every release. It’s an incredible feeling to have people love and support something I love to do. So thank you and prepare for 2023 because more is coming.
