Artist Interview: “Seventeen” by Mason Bailey

Q: Hi, Mason, I’m digging the vibe of “Seventeen”! I love your vocals and how they effortlessly switch from different ranges and singing styles. What was your favorite part of creating this track?

MASON BAILEY: Thank you so much for the kind words! I feel my favourite part of creating the track was recording the final vocal just knowing that I’ve got a song that I’ve worked so hard on finally come together with a solid vocal to compliment the production of the track.

Q: What has been one of the highlights of your music career so far?

MASON BAILEY: Back in 2018 I did a UK Tour as a support act for Peter Andre that was an amazing experience supporting such a huge public figure.

Q: I’m always fascinated with an artist’s journey. Do you remember who or what first got you into music? Were your families musical growing up?

MASON BAILEY: When I was 9 I entered the school talent contest (singing) which I won ever since then it gave me the drive to take music seriously and as I’ve got older this drive has just grew and grew. My mum is really into her music so growing up she’s introduced me to artist who have grew to inspire me.

Q: Can you walk me a bit through the writing process of “Seventeen”?

MASON BAILEY: So, I started writing the song back in 2021 (awhile ago) at that time we messed about with ideas to do with the song but I came to the decision I didn’t like the chorus’ we had written for the song so I left the song and went away to record other music. Then back last October I pulled the song back up and me and a producer called ‘Charlie Kirby’ went through writing another chorus for this song and eventually I came to a point where I loved the new chorus and here we are with a released date and a song I’m in love with.

Q: Obviously it is partly about the age of seventeen, which is a very monumental age, but I’m still curious of what the full inspiration behind the track is?

MASON BAILEY: At Seventeen I was in a relationship with a girl and things were going well but life kind of got the upper hand and things all of a sudden went wrong so writing this song I reaped back in my life (now my life is somewhat more stable) and I wrote about my experiences between 17 and 18 year old.

Q: You post a lot of videos on Tiktok. What have the pros and cons of putting your music & growing a fanbase on the app?

MASON BAILEY: The pros of posting on Tik Tok is I can reach a wider audience and more people can hear and engage with my music. I feel there isn’t many cons of posting or doing things to do with Tik Tok because I feel its all exposure for me and my music.

Q: If you could collaborate with any musician, dead or alive, who would it be?

MASON BAILEY: For me it would have to be Matty Healy I’m in love with the music he creates with The 1975 and I love the dynamic in his voice therefore it would be a dream to collaborate with him and create a banger!

Q: Being young and already having such a distinct sound, I’m so excited for your future! What’s coming up next for you in 2023?

MASON BAILEY: My plans for 2023 is to release my first ever EP, then headline a show showcasing the songs. Also to continue supporting bands and other artists and getting more radio play and hopefully a place in the uk charts with the drive and ambitions I have!
