Q: The production is KILLING. Walk us through your creative process for “E.N.E.R.GY”!
DEE & D’Z: Well, thank you so much! Glad you like it. The process is quite the same every time: d’Z comes up with an idea, a rough version of the song that he created on the piano. He plays the chords for Dee, who tries to channel the energy of the tune. Since d’Z is a drummer, he often can explain the groove of the song, and where it’s heading to. After a while, Dee starts to write sentences, which eventually become full melodic lyrics. When Dee is satisfied with both melodic lines and lyrics, d’Z creates a full mock-up in his home recording studio, including all the (midi) instruments. After Dee has received d’Z’s demo, she adds her own voice to it. When all the demo work is done, the next phase is to re-record all the tracks by real musicians with real instruments, layer by layer, in our favorite recording studio. A lot of work but very satisfying!!
Q: What was your favorite moment creating “E.N.E.R.GY”?
DEE & D’Z: Oohh, there are too many! Every time, a new instrument is recorded, it feels like magic, whether it’s a great guitar solo or a wonderful track of the horn section. It’s like building your dream house brick by brick!
Q: My favorite part of making music is experimenting with different sounds! What is something you haven’t incorporated into your music but want to?
DEE & D’Z: Nice question! Although our music is based on real instruments (quite often drums, double or electric bass, electric guitar, keys, and horns), we will add some electronic sounds to one of our next tunes. Another thing we’re gonna do is to work with a huge string section and a female/male choir. Really looking forward to it!
Q: As artists, what are some challenges you had to overcome to get to where you are in your musical journey?
DEE & D’Z: Since d’Z is also active as a solo artist, Dee & d’Z could benefit from some contacts and connections he’d made already for his own career. That having said, there are always challenges for every emerging independent artist, right? Since we’re not ‘commercial mainstream’, we have to work hard to be noticed. Luckily for us, we’re not striving for being the greatest, most famous music duo ever, hahaha. We just want to have fun and make the best music with as little concessions as we can.
Q: Do you guys play any instruments? What’s an instrument that you would like to learn?
DEE & D’Z: Dee is a singer and plays the piano. d’Z is a drummer who knows his way around the keys. He’d love to play the guitar, but due to time limitations, he will be stuck to three or four chords he once learned to master ;o)
Q: What is coming up next for you?
DEE & D’Z: After d’Z has released his new single in the autumn, we’ll be in the studio again to start recording new songs! As we said we’re gonna capture some orchestral/choral arrangements. Gonna be epic and groovy.
