Artist Interview: “Without You” by SZN Changes

Q: Hi! Thanks so much for doing this interview. It really means a lot. Before we get to it, I wanted to start off with an icebreaker. What’s one food you could eat for the rest of your life?

SZN CHANGES: Fish. It literally doesn’t matter the type of fish or how it’s cooked, as long as it’s fish. I literally can eat fish every day and not get tired of it.

Q: “Without You” It’s very romantic and intimate. What inspired it?

SZN: “Without You” was inspired by feelings that I had, or should I say, had for a particular person. I put a lot of time into creating the record and into making sure that it conveys my feelings in the most transparent way possible. A lot of times, it’s not easy for me to say what I’m feeling by just saying, so when I really want to get something out, I put it in a song, and that’s what I did with this record.

Q: How were you able to find the right lyrics?

SZN: It honestly just flowed, as it does with all of my records, right out of my head. Whenever I’m recording, it’s always a freestyle process; I don’t write anything down. So when creating “Without You,” the writing process was simply me singing exactly what I felt and came to mind. It was all about feeling and what I was feeling in that moment.

Q: How has your upbringing influenced your music, and specifically your song “Without You”?

SZN: I was raised in a family full of love, and as long as I can remember, I’ve always had a sense of what love is about; I’ve always known that I want it, and I want to feel love, not just in any way I can, but in the right way. A lot of us don’t see the ideal image of love that we would like to experience in our own relationships with our partners when we’re growing up watching our parents figure it out.

When we want to see that loving image, we see couples on TV like Claire and Cliff or Aunt Viv and Uncle Phil, and we say, “That’s how I want my marriage and family to be when I grow up.” To sum it all up, a lot of my experiences and what I want to experience growing up and in the years to come are what influence a lot of my records.

Q: What has your music journey been like so far?

SZN: So far, my journey has had a lot of ups and downs, but I’d say more ups than anything. I tend to look at every “L” as a “Lesson Learned” and every “W” as a “What’s Next.” Either way, we’re steady on the road to success.

Q: What is your ultimate goal as an artist?

SZN: My ultimate goal as an artist is to simply be remembered as one of, if not THE, KING of R&B when it’s all said and done. Rather that be in my career, or in Life. I just wanna leave my mark and be remembered as a Legend.

Q: Do you have any upcoming projects you can tell us about?

SZN: Yes, indeed. My next single, “In My Mind,” feat. KallmeKobe will be dropping very soon, so stay tuned for more updates on that!

Q: Tell me about the name SZN Changes.

SZN: SZN Changes comes from the name of my friend group collective Team SZN, that I came up with in high school. The name of the friend group came from our team always being in season, like wearing a black outfit anytime of year. From there, after moving to Atlanta, I started going through a lot of life changes, & from there, since I came up with the name Team SZN, I took the SZN & added the Changes & there we have it, SZN Changes. The Seasons are always changing as life goes on and the world turns. One thing we can always be certain of is SZN’s Change & we gotta be ready for SZN Changes.
