“January” is a truly memorable song in the indie folk genre, as it doesn’t quite fit into a genre. At times, it is a pop song; at other times, it is more of a slower-paced love song. No matter what direction Valianti takes listeners in “January,” the song is guaranteed to keep them on their toes, captivated by her unique sound.
When asked what “January” is about, Valianti stated it “…is a song about loving someone from afar, knowing that the person they’re with is a better fit than you are. The hurt is still there, and the feelings don’t go away, but you know that as hard as you might try, you’re not what they need. The song reflects the impact of memories, even as life moves forward, and the feeling of being tethered to the past and what could have been.”
