“Feel Alive” by Beatnik

“Feel Alive,” the latest single from artist Beatnik, is a soulful, funky track dealing with topics of self-reflection. The song is filled with insightful lyrics about wanting to “feel alive” once again. The song also delves into issues such as the existential crisis and impending doom question of “Why are we here and how much longer do we have on earth?” This juxtaposition to the uplifting, disco-esque instrumental creates an irresistible summer song.

“Feel Alive” captivates with a unique blend of musical elements from the start. It opens with a sultry instrumental featuring an ultra-soulful saxophone and groovy synths. The first lyrics of the track are powerful and get right to the point: “No one likes me when I’m drunk, and lately I’ve been drinking a lot; it’s just to keep myself from thinking about how much precious time we’ve got.” As the deep lyrics continue, the beat gets louder and more groovy, never straying from the overall fun-loving vibe of the track.

The artist behind Beatnik is Peter LaBarge, a multi-talented musician, responsible for vocals, synths, bass, etc. Beatnik came to fruition as a side project at first from the main band Peter was in. The name Beatnik comes from Beat poet literature, which Peter read up on at Powell’s bookstore in Portland.

“Feel Alive’ was a labor of love, recorded at Peter’s home. Most of the guitar work was from Peter’s friend Benton Wood (Panthermilk), and Zane Peterson provided the Saxophone. The vocals & bass guitar were recorded at Temple City Studios, with Brecken Jones (Strange Familia) on the desk, as he has been with every Beatnik release thus far. Mixing/Mastering & additional production were provided by Brecken. “Feel Alive” will be a part of Beatnik’s upcoming EP, “Life Sucks, Then You Dance.”
