“Scars” by 23 Fields

East Sussex-based Three-piece Alternative-Folk outfit, 23 Fields, has carved out their own space in their listeners’ hearts with every release since their first album debuted a year ago. A trio that prides themselves on lyrically-driven think pieces, their music inspires an emotional reaction from all who get to hear it. As they celebrate the release of their auspicious Sophomore record “To Follow This Year’s Fashion,” its success is largely anchored in its tonally rich and thought-provoking single “Scars.”

The piece begins with a flowing acoustic guitar accompanied by light percussive and keyboard backing. As frontman Step Adams’s voice appears, his stoic composition and reflective tone give the song narrative wings. With poetic inclinations in their writing, they tell a powerful story of overcoming domestic violence and not allowing those responsible to come out the other end with their reputation intact. Lines such as “I will never understand why you call yourself a man. Weakness is what you show” reinforce the passion with which Adams delivers his words and leave the listener feeling a wide range of emotions by the song’s end.

Characterized by a rhythmic, almost hypnotic beat and melody, the piece reels the listener in and we feel a sense of symbiotic connection to the beat. The arrangement of the instrumentals highlights the emotional weight of the message incredibly, adding enough to complement the lyrical delivery without pulling focus from the progressive flow. Having defined such a unique sound so early in their time together, we can only wait with anticipation to see what is next to come from the minds of these musicians.
