“Ocean Deep” by Aster Rhys

Dive into the mythical world that is “Ocean Deep” by Connecticut based artist Aster Rhys. A self described wanderer, Rhys’s sound transcends genre, taking influence from the iconic 60s pop to classic folk. “Ocean Deep” is an introduction to the singer’s upcoming EP “Four Directions” which plans to tackle the elements and their relation to love, loss, resilience, and desire. Recorded at Off The Row Studio in Nashville, the artist was selected as the studio’s break out artist.

“Ocean Deep” is a mesmerizing folky track, with Rhys’s rich vocals gliding across flutes, mandolins, harmonicas, and guitars. All the instruments weave into each other, adding a jolt of energy throughout the production. The track even thoughtfully starts with waves hitting the shore before going into full swing. The musician’s passion is undeniable, with strong belts and light whispers, she’s in full control of her vocals.

The song itself has layers to it. Rhys was able to compare a complex relationship with a lover to the complexity of the ocean. There’s so much unknown about the ocean, but what happens when you know more about the ocean than you do about a past lover? This is exactly what Rhys expands on in this track. “My impression shakes at your feet / and I hold as much as I can keep / and I know more of space / oh then I know of your mind / oh my heart is below the waterline,” she sings in the second verse.

Overall Aster Rhys knows who she is as an artist and she delivers art she is truly passionate about. Her voice fits beautifully with this sound and her storytelling is perfect for the genre.
