Fans of pop-punk, uplifting, danceable music won’t get enough of rock group Forever at Midnight’s “Meant to Be.” The catchy tune, which can be likened to the energy of Paramore’s sound and the emotional depth of Fall Out Boy, tackles the topic of falling for a friend and all the confusing emotions that one goes through during it. The story of unrequited love is flawlessly sung over a powerful guitar and drum-driven instrumental, guaranteed to get anyone up and dancing.
Forever at Midnight consists of vocalist Liv Howlett, Evan Hughes on drums, and Josh Kim, responsible for guitar and programming. The group brings a unique element to the punk scene. Their sound, reminiscent of early 2000s pop-punk, is a nostalgic yet fresh take on the genre. What sets them apart is their ability to infuse emotional, personal lyrics, usually found in pop ballads, into their punk sound, creating a connection with the audience.
According to vocalist Liv Howlett, “When I heard the track that the boys had written, I closed my eyes, and I could just see the credits rolling after an epic Y2K film where the guy finally notices the girl who’s crazy about him, and who’s been there all along right beside him. I just wanted to write a simple, feel-good number that could be just a bit cheeky, a decent amount desperate, and a lot in my teenage feelings.”
