“Pages You’ll Never Read“ by Elke Schon

Elke Schon delivers an emotional indie pop tune with her new release “Pages You’ll Never Read.” Eerie synths envelop you, intimate vocals draw you in, and powerful lyrics tell you a captivating story in this track about loving someone who doesn’t love you back.

Unrequited love is a well worn topic in music, yet Schon effortlessly brings a fresh perspective to the theme. She sings about an unhealthy relationship where she wants someone more than they want her, even though this other person sometimes acts or speaks in a way that continues to lead her on. She grapples with the knowledge that she can feel so strongly for someone who doesn’t feel anything in return- and who also doesn’t even seem to care that she cares.

The clever title of the track is part of a lyric in the bridge, where Schon sings about crying while journaling. She knows that she is wasting her tears, because the person she’s journaling about will never actually read those pages, and therefore never understand how she’s feeling. It’s a constant juxtaposition between Schon’s desperate yearning, and the other person’s painful apathy. Big production moments and swelling instrumentation, especially in the bridge, heighten the stakes in sync with Schon’s dynamic vocal performance.

“You promised that you wanted me” is the last lyric of the song, which makes for an impactful end to the song. Schon hasn’t found closure, giving voice to the difficulties of moving on when someone has left you with nothing but an unfulfilled promise.
