Daisy Skelton delivers an introvert anthem with this singer-songwriter pop tune about feeling like you’re not participating in life correctly. Warm guitars, uptempo drums, and vulnerable storytelling all merge to create this memorable track, “Honey & Lemon.”
“Honey & Lemon” was inspired by Skelton’s experiences in university, where she would stay home while her friends went out to party. Even though alone time is valuable, and sometimes more enjoyable than socializing, it can be difficult not to have some fear of missing out. Skelton wonders if she’s holding herself back from experiencing a good time, wishing it was easier for her to be like the confident girl at the bar who “stays out all night with her eyes wide open.” This is contrasted with Skelton’s own typical Friday night, where she is just “at home drinking honey and lemon.”
This struggle between honoring and questioning your personality is a relatable one, especially when you see so many of your peers master their place in life, and social circles, with ease. Even though she is comfortable with having a small group of friends and quiet nights, Skelton wonders whether she might be talking herself out of participating in meaningful life experiences simply due to fear. She explores this sentiment beautifully throughout the song, especially in the line “I’m the designated driver in the movies who’s run off the road before she gets the chance to live.” If you’ve ever struggled with holding yourself back, the catchy beat and mellow vocals of “Honey & Lemon” offer comfort and reassurance that you’re not the only one.
