Review & Press Interview: ‘Sick to My Stomach’ by Natalie Jane

Natalie Jane’s talent doesn’t need much explanation. She’s a powerhouse who can effortlessly turn everything she touches into an emotional banger. The best thing about Sick to My Stomach is the fact it doesn’t have a weak link. Every song is a banger in its own way. The EP opener, “Sick to My Stomach,” sees her belt through electrifying beat full of catharsis and darkly confessions, and she does it so effortlessly.

Taking inspiration from real-life stories that she comes across, Jane’s songs easily resonate with everyone without getting too much under your skin, but the groove and the feeling are infused in the beat and the soundscapes. It’s easy to get lost in her song, emotionally and physically. Sick to My Stomach journeys to some dark places, whether it’s love addiction or entangled feelings or gut-wrenching situations that are bad for you, Jane is there for you.

In a way, Jane is like your cool best friend, who gets what you’re going through and pulls you up from the ground with her music. Her voice is fierce and fearless, and as an artist, she really lets herself out creatively and experiments as she pleases. While most artists who sing as well as her don’t typically use autotone in their music, Jane finds a new way to play with the technology and offers something unique.

She a bit carefree in that sense, being in the moment, fully present and letting the future unfolds as it does naturally. While most speak about a clear plan of where they want to be in three years, Natalie Jane embraces the unknown because “that’s the beauty.” In three years, she might be doing something completely different, or she might be doing the exact same thing, but the journey to find out is just as exciting as the destination.

Press Q&A with Natalie Jane

Q: Your music is almost ritualistic and meditative. Is there a place you go to for inspiration?

Natalie Jane: I honestly get a lot of inspiration from Tik Tok. A lot of the music I write isn’t very happy, so I be scrolling and seeing this girl sobbing about her guy not being nice, and I see other people’s stories, and like, “I can write about this,” so that’s where I go for inspiration.

Q: How do you approach songwriting? Do you start with lyrics, a melody, or a particular emotion you’re trying to capture? What does that process look like for you?

Jane: I typically go to sessions with an idea of what I want to say that day and a reference song that sets the vibe I’m aiming for. I want the sound to be very cohesive on this project.

Q: Is there a particular track on Sick to My Stomach that holds a special significance for you, either because of the story behind it or the emotions it captures?

Jane: My favorite song on that project is “June.” It’s very different from what I’ve done in the past. It’s just me and an acoustic guitar.

Q: What are you most looking forward to sharing with fans during this tour that’s different from your previous performances?

Jane: Last year’s Up Tour was just me on stage with big light production and risers, but there were no instruments. This year, we’re bringing drums. I’ve always wanted to start a clothing brand.

Q: How has your sense of self and artistry evolved since Where am I? and previous projects? How has it pushed you into the creative space we hear in Sick to My Stomach?

Jane: From the beginning of that project to the end of ‘Sick to My Stomach,’ I’ve just grown so much, and I’ve experienced so much more

Q: At just 20, you’ve achieved so much in your career. Where do you see your sound evolving in the next few years?

Jane: That’s the beauty…you, like, don’t really know what’s gonna come next. You kind of just do what you’re feeling in the moment. I don’t know what I’m gonna be doing in two or three years… it could be completely different, or it could be identical.
