“Shane” by Power Rob

Baltimore-based EDM artist Power Rob’s name is well known in his own East Coast club scene and far beyond for their heavy upbeat rhythms and a commitment to keeping the party alive far past midnight. Driven by their lively and off-the-wall style of play, their music feels years ahead of its time and takes fans on a journey with every listen. His newest single “Shane” makes great strides toward fortifying this legacy as he opens up his heart and tells the story of pain felt in his own life through expectations of love coming back to hurt them, set to the kind of rhythm that has become synonymous with their very name.

The piece begins with a futuristic style of keyboard embellishment as a synthetic tone slowly raises in volume in the background. Heavy bass notes decorate the symphony of tonality as the pace quickens and the world of the music develops. Equal parts sci-fi and a clinic in synthwave, the song’s place in the electronic world is clear from the get-go.

The lyrics waste no time getting to the thesis of the narrative, as the vocals are quickly introduced with the opening line “Taking time left to waste, it’s such a shame, but it feels so familiar, can’t lie.” Sung with an intensity that reflects the emotional weight of the lyrics to the artist’s heart, we immediately feel a connection to the artist’s state of mind and an interest in seeing what will come from their story.
