“Dark Times” by Chellcy Reitsma’s

Dutch-American singer-songwriter and overall powerhouse Chellcy Reitsma’s talents are undeniable, demonstrated by her long history of producing work that blends a classic composition style with a modern passion and flair. With an illustrious track record of energetic hits over the years, she embarks on her most ambitious project to date, a double concept album focusing on the importance of living every day with passion and determination, embodying the Latin phrase “Carpe Diem.” The first of the dual records “Momento Mori” proves to be every bit as pensive and stimulating as promised as it makes great strides toward fortifying the artist’s already robust legacy. Headlining the record, the first track of the album “Dark Times” proves to be an incredible example of the proclivities of the set.

The piece begins with a few quick plucked electric guitar notes and quickly takes off with a rhythm reminiscent of classic blues mixed with rock and roll. There is a palpable pattern and flow to the beat as we feel the movement inspired by the notes. Reitsma’s vocals come in shortly to begin the narrative and set the tone with the opening line “Nothings going on, all I do is cancel all the work and plans I made. Tossed out the fucking window.”

The single establishes itself as nothing short of an earworm from the start. Anchored in a vintage style of guitar play and percussive flow, but motivated by Reitsma’s vocal passion and a chorus you can’t help but sing along to, it inspires a sense of curiosity to see what the artist could possibly have coming down the pipeline.
