This indie rock n’ roll song uses grungy guitars and uptempo rhythms to create tension for the listener. You are immediately drawn into the story from the first crisp beat, as well as the first lyric: “you’re asking why I’ve gotten quiet, I’m upset I won’t deny it.” From the immediately restless tone of the production and the drama quickly introduced by the storytelling, you know you are in for a ride with “Red Light” by Martin Leroux.
Leroux sings about an unhealthy and argumentative relationship in this track where the other person tries to control him so thoroughly that it feels like he is being ruled over. The determination in the vocal delivery tells us that he is no longer going to put up with that, though, and the pumping chorus sets the scene for his own personal uprising. Even though this person has continuously given him the “red light,” Leroux sees now that he’s the one in the driver’s seat, and he has the power to ignore that sign and do what he believes is best for him.
Though this metaphor works perfectly when thinking about a romantic relationship, it can also apply to broader themes in life and serve as a reminder to the listener to take control of their path and do the things that they have always wanted to. “Red Light” is a powerful and energetic anthem that works to inspire those who experience self-doubt and fear, providing both solace and catharsis in every detail of the arrangement.
