“Joy” by Hibernator is an explosive punk rock track about the frustration of having writer’s block. Wailing guitars, invigorating drums, and an impassioned vocal performance offer a cathartic release for anyone who has struggled to actually express the emotions they are feeling with words.

Writer’s block is an inescapable villain in any creative’s life. It’s one of the worst feelings when you are inspired, or even just need to meet a deadline, but your brain remains completely empty. It can even cause a complete identity crisis for those who pride themselves on their art, which Hibernator seems to be going through as well based on the line “it’s been a while since I felt like me.” They lament the fact that every attempt at something new sounds like “the same old words that everyone has sold.” All they want to do is write something good enough to get “stuck inside your head,” and luckily they end up accomplishing that with this song.

It is slightly ironic that a song about writer’s block is so catchy and expressive, with lyrics that perfectly express the anger and desperation over wanting to create something, but running into walls every time you try. Grungy guitars chug through the song, electric riffs offer ear candy just when you need it, and satisfying drum fills help heighten energy as the song progresses. The thoughtful arrangement showcases Hibernator’s strong artistic vision. The belted vocals are intense in each moment, sometimes rising into full on screaming to further raise the emotion of “Joy.”
