“Don’t Let Me Notice” by The Flying Beets is a riveting rock tune that draws the listener in and takes them for a ride. With elements of country, rock n’ roll, and alternative genres, The Flying Beets showcases their eclectic yet cohesive style with this new single. Chugging electric guitars and a tight drum rhythm lay the groundwork for the passionately delivered vocals. A cathartic song about seeing an ex out in public, “Don’t Let Me Notice” is angry, remorseful, and a perfect track to dance around to or speed down the highway to.
Though the listener doesn’t find out exactly what happened between the narrator and the person he is singing about, it seems this song tells the story of seeing an ex in public and hoping that they don’t notice you. Lines like “don’t let me notice you get up to leave” and “please find your way out and avoid catching my eye” relatably describe the strange shame of unexpectedly seeing someone you used to be close to. You wish that you weren’t so aware of them, and pray that they don’t become aware of you. Even though it’s objectively not a big deal, it can feel like there’s absolutely nothing worse than an awkward conversation with an ex that you weren’t prepared for.
The impassioned vocal delivery in this track is something special, vulnerably displaying the emotional torture that the narrator is going through. In the bridge, the line “I regret it everyday” tells us that this sighting brings up not just awkward feelings for him, but a kind of mourning too.
