“People of the Snake“ by The Northern Light

“People of the Snake” opens with a riveting electric guitar riff as the drum rhythm begins to lock in and build to its full arrangement. With classic elements of rock, as well as twangy moments and narrative driven lyrics, The Northern Light delivers a one of a kind track with “People of the Snake.” This song is an inspiring tale about how people can resist oppression and hardship, and are ultimately resilient despite the inevitably of hard times. The Northern Light explores this theme by drawing inspiration from real historical events that occurred on the Oregon Trail in the 1860s. This creative approach to songwriting, and the resulting unique subject matter, shows The Northern Light’s special brand of artistry.

Descriptive imagery about burning rivers and expansive deserts effectively set the scene of “People of the Snake,” and the rise and fall of the arrangement matches the durability of the people in this song, who experience setbacks but are determined to rise again. The Northern Light examines the harm done when the oppressor writes history- the people they oppressed and stole from are forgotten. But this track aims to remember them and refuses to allow corruption to erase this unseen strength.

Though this track tells a specific tale, its perspectives can still apply to many of our lives. Everyone faces challenges, sometimes from an unfair and frustrating source, and we must learn to find our resolve and overcome them. It’s inspiring on both a personal and a community level, a reminder that it is okay to not be satisfied with your circumstances and seek better, especially if those circumstances are at the hand of an oppressor.
