Janet Devlin, a country-rock singer hailing from Northern Ireland, delivers incredible storytelling, riveting vocals, and classic country sonics with a twist in her new album, “Emotional Rodeo.” The fourteen tracks on this album range from fluid ballads to uptempo rock and from playful storytelling to raw authenticity. Devlin does not shy away from difficult emotions, instead wrapping the stories she aims to tell with fresh perspectives and vivid imagery, all laid on top of beautiful country soundscapes.
The opening track, “Cigarette Sweets,” immediately displays Devlin’s aptitude for songwriting. A detailed story of growing up told over tense banjo, whining slide guitar, and plucked acoustics shows how comfortably Devlin fits into this genre while still being able to bring her own unique style. This song tackles nostalgia as she longs for the simplicity of the past, singing “take me back to when we used to smoke cigarette sweets.”
Other stand out songs on the album are “Daddy” and “Burden,” and their opposite natures show Devlin’s impressive versatility. “Daddy” is a clever and humorous story of Devlin taking on the role of a stereotypical “sugar daddy” that pays for everything and extravagantly spoils their partner. With catchy lines like “you can call me daddy” and “I’m the man” you can hear how much fun Devlin is having stepping into this character, and it makes the listening experience fun as well. “Burden,” on the other hand, is dark and vulnerable. With lyrics about the cycle of feeling like a burden in a toxic relationship, the soft acoustics and emotional vocal performance give us the slower side of Devlin’s style.
