“Town Line“ by Owen Young

Owen Young offers up an intimate folk listening experience with “Town Line,” a twangy and comforting EP with captivating storytelling that is inspired by Young’s own life experiences in rural Southern Ontario. This EP is part two of a four part album called “Muddy River,” a project that began during the pandemic. Classic country instrumentation like harmonica, slide guitar, and plucked acoustics add to the rural landscape Young is painting with his lyrics, and with themes of love, nostalgia, and introspection, this EP has something for everyone.

A true love is referenced in several of the songs on “Town Line,” telling the listener that this relationship is one that has been transformative for Young. Even after many years with this woman, he sings “I can’t believe I get to be her man” in the second track of the EP, “I Can’t Believe.” This sweet sentiment beautifully represents how it feels to be in love and experience the awe of mutual admiration.

With upbeat, twiddling tunes to slower, swaying rhythms, Young displays a diverse, yet cohesive range of songs that take the listener through a satisfying range of emotions. A particularly impactful track is the closing song of the EP, “Ontario Home.” Vivid imagery describes a place that is clearly meaningful to Owen as he sings about returning to a place that feels like home. For anyone who misses the place that holds their roots, this lovely track, with lyrics about packing up and getting ready to go home, is sure to strike a chord.
