“Portraits of Dylan“ by Joey Clark

“Portraits of Dylan” by Joey Clark is an invigorating album containing ten re-imagined versions of Bob Dylan songs. Clark honors Dylan with these authentic interpretations, while at the same time displaying his own artistry by adding his personal styles and fresh ideas to the songs. Harmonica, slide guitar, and intimate vocals give this folk rock album a raw vulnerability, and whether you’ve previously been a fan of Bob Dylan’s music or not, the sweet sonics in “Portraits of Dylan” have something for everyone.

Releasing a good cover album is likely a daunting task, but Clark effortlessly displays his personal sound without ever taking away from the original spirit of Dylan’s tracks. In Clark’s version of “You’re Going To Make Me Lonesome When You Go,” for example, the vocal performance is much calmer and more intimate, and the harmonica and acoustic guitars take on different textures than the original. But, he doesn’t lose the vulnerability of the storytelling or the serenity of the arrangement that makes this Dylan song so impactful.

Clark’s smooth, warm vocals are one of the best parts of the album. His calm, yet emotional delivery leads you through the stories of these songs. “Portraits of Dylan” pays homage to the talent and impact of Bob Dylan, and encourages the listener to take in these songs in a new light. With walking bass lines, steady drums, and fluid guitars, this album is an impressive body of work, with Clark’s talent and thoughtfulness written into every element of the arrangements.
