“Tiny Talk” by Sade Fox tells the emotional story of losing a relationship with someone you were once close to, and watching that person fill the space you once took up in their life with someone else. Vulnerable feelings of betrayal and loneliness fill the beautiful landscape of this song, and Fox’s impactful lyrics are supported by subtle, catchy rhythms and atmospheric production.
Rhythmic electronic synth opens this song as Fox sets the scene for her reflections on this relationship. She sings “we weren’t built to last” and “the future’s in the past with our misillusions,” acknowledging how the relationship was probably doomed from the beginning, but that’s only clear in hindsight. The future Fox pictured with this person is now just a disillusioned dream that she has to leave behind. It can be hard to accept that someone you loved so much, someone you thought would always be a steady presence in your life, might actually turn into a memory, or a stranger that you don’t ever see again. Fox grapples with this realization poignantly, allowing all of the messy emotions to shine through.
Acoustic guitar strums and hand snaps eventually join in, slowly creating intrigue in preparation for the building production present in the second half of the song. The first half is more introspective, as Fox takes a look at the long gone relationship. The second half is where the harmonies and arrangement begin to build, matching the growing emotion in the lyrics. Fox repeatedly sings “you talk to her more than I talk to you now,” showing the difficulty she is having over accepting that a different girl has become more important to this person than Fox ever was.
