“Spinning Round“ by The Hogstad Brothers

“Spinning Round” is an experimental indie pop tune by The Hogstad Brothers, a duo based in Brooklyn that works to blend elements of different genres in order to bring fresh, unpredictable sonics to the listener. With a grooving, funky bass, electronic vocal processing, and uptempo, catchy rhythms, “Spinning Round” offers a unique sonic landscape and an irresistible listening experience. 

This one of a kind track follows the story of someone coming down from a psychedelic experience and examining what that experience has done to him. Lines like “did he just catch a glimpse of destiny, or dream of everything that we could be” capture the spirituality that this person may have felt during his psychedelic experience, as if he was able to observe the promises and dreams of the future like they were a tangible thing. The repetition of the title throughout the song, as well as the captivating, monotone melodies, put the listener in a dreamlike trance as well, transporting you to the ambient soundscape of an alternate reality. 

Though much of this song feels like it occurs outside of the confines of real life, lyrics such as “shadows fall back on his soul” are a reminder that the downfalls of the real world can easily reclaim you. A cool moment in the production mirrors this idea when everything but a heavenly synth rings out behind the vocal for a few beats, before the steady rhythm drops back in and pulls you back to Earth. It’s an effective reminder of the push and pull between struggle and hope, pain and healing, as we all keep “spinning round.”
