“Emma“ by Asta Bria

“Emma” by Asta Bria is a beautiful and moving ballad about wishing for better. Bria, a singer-songwriter based in London, uses subtle, uptempo rhythms and captivating vocals to paint the story of this song. Moving strings, rhythmic piano, and riffing guitars build the uplifting tone of “Emma,” allowing the inspirational and poignant lyrics to shine on top of this backbone. 

This track was inspired by, and named for, Bria’s own niece, who at just three years old tried to embark on a journey to feed starving children across the world after she saw the suffering of others plastered across the TV screen. This immediate sense of justice felt in someone so young is moving, and the reminder that even the youngest children can see the unfairness laced through different peoples’ lives, which can inspire all of us to bring a little more altruism and empathy into our lives. The lyrics “there is a girl who wants to save this broken world” and “she packs her bag with bread and cheese and sweets” reveal the determination and innocence of Emma, and her brave resolve to fix a problem, even if it’s a bit unrealistic. 

Ultimately, “Emma” is a song that implores the listener to remember the importance of keeping a pure soul. The line “we can make perfection with souls of gold” is poignant and poetic. Even though there is endless suffering that sometimes seems impossible to overcome, with golden souls that are willing to do the work, even the worst obstacles can be tamed.
