“Letters From You“ by Jamie Shew

“Letters From You” is a vulnerable and incredibly moving acoustic tune by Jamie Shew, a singer-songwriter who isn’t afraid to tackle difficult concepts in her music. In this track, she draws inspiration from her grandmother after finding a bunch of old letters that included correspondence between her grandmother and her great-grandmother. This gave Shew a unique insight into her grandmother’s mind, and her loneliness. A deeply reflective song, “Letters From You” looks at the hardships of growing older for both an individual and their loved ones.

It can be easy to forget that a relative has their own thoughts, feelings, and past that has shaped them. Especially when it’s a parent or grandparent, we look up to those relatives as infallible and all knowing when we’re young, and it can be hard to shake that perspective. Shew takes a look at that strange feeling of learning to see a relative as an equal with lines like “trying to find the courage to stand in her light.” The plucked acoustic guitars lay a sweet and simple backbone for the song, while dancing piano melodies, ethereal backing vocals, and steady, comforting drums move the listener through the journey of the song.

Through the letters Shew read, she realized her grandmother had been lonely, longing for connection that can be hard to find when your family has moved around, and your mind and body begin to collect ailments with age. This song beautifully honors the memory of Shew’s grandmother, and reminds us all to cherish our relationships while we still can.
