“Sperarci Due Eroi“ by Francesca Pichierri

“Sperarci Due Ero” is a poignant piano ballad merged with catchy indie pop production that tells a story of courage and love while going through a difficult time with a loved one. This track is part of a concept album by Francesca Pichierri, an independent singer-songwriter from Italy, in which she takes the listener through her mother’s experience with cancer. Whether you have had a similar experience, or watched a loved one go through any other kind of turbulence, “Sperarci Due Ero” is an inspirational and vulnerable track that helps to imbed hope in the listener. 

Bouncing, rhythmic piano opens the track as Pichierri’s lilting vocals begin, immediately hypnotizing the listener and surrounding them in the sonic landscape. Later in the song, a steady kick drum and rhythmic instrumentation joins the arrangement, effectively upping the tension as Pichierri’s emotion grows. Visceral lyrics paint a snowy landscape underneath the Northern Lights, a dreamy image that honors magical love in spite of a difficult time. Pichierri sings “I wanna grow older with you,” hoping just to extend the time with her loved one for as long as possible. It’s a sweet and relatable sentiment, where the simple idea of more time is all you really desire. 

Non-lyrical vocal melodies add an otherworldly element to the track, letting the listener transcend into the song’s atmosphere. After a particularly dense section of the song, everything drops out for the outro except the piano and vocal. This ends the song in the same intimate place it started, with Pichierri’s raw emotion pulling directly at your heartstrings.
