“Brave New World” is the debut single from the fresh group Sunsara, a fresh rock band based in London that merges their British, Indian, and Polish roots to craft unique sonic landscapes and compelling lyrical narratives. “Brave New World” is a poignant and thought-provoking reminder that we should examine our relationships and how technology may be negatively affecting them.
In this song, Sunsara describes a woman trapped in a dystopian world where technology seems to consume everyone. This is not too far-fetched of an idea with the state of modern society, where technology truly has somewhat taken over the way we interact with the world and each other. The second verse shows the subject of the song waking up to the fact that she has not been living freely. She says “I had one chance, I had one life, I lived through the projection of another’s eye.” All of us have probably fallen victim to the opinions of others, and this is only made worse by modern technology and social media.
Lyrics that reference fire, like “this flame shall dance and dance around,” add a sense of urgency and destruction to the track, heightening the stakes. This tension is mirrored in the production with grungy guitars, riveting drum rhythms, and unrelenting electric guitar solos. After the second chorus, the electric guitar solo is captivating and inviting, increasing the energy along with the drums as a buried vocal shouts across the song. All of these elements build and build, leading the listener to the last chorus in an immensely satisfying way.
