“Dunkelrot“ by Vincent Krennerich

“Dunkelrot” by Vincent Krennerich is a captivating instrumental track that blends elements of jazz and hip-hop to craft a uniquely immersive soundscape. Rippling piano opens the song, and then a melodic horn solo begins dancing across the intro. This sparse introduction to the song leads you to expect a classic jazz track, but when a heavier, hip-hop style beat drops in, the surprising shift is immensely satisfying. This beat locks in the rhythm with jabbed piano chords, with the horn solo coming back in to merge the intro with the new rhythm. 

The track has a fluid flow of energy, rising and following mostly based on if the lead horn is present. Sometimes, just bass and drum are grounding the song in contrast with denser, more energetic sections that are full of ear candy. “Dunkelrot” translates to “dark red” in English, and the ominous undertones of the pulsing beat certainly match this title well. The combination of lighter jazz sonics with heavier hip-hop beats keeps the listener hooked from start to finish, trying to work out all of the details of the arrangement. 

Though there are no lyrics or vocals in this song, the horn acts perfectly in place of those typical song elements. With quick walking melodies and longer jabs, the lead horn takes you through a narrative just the same as vocals in any other song might. The piano chords and beat that drops in and out work the whole time to support this lead, filling in moments where it is sparse, and leaving the song completely when it needs a moment to shine.
