“sinking II” by Wotts is a riveting indie pop track with ambient synths, filtered vocals, and a heavy beat that makes for a one of a kind listening experience that you just can’t turn away from. The reason for the “II” in the title is that this track is a remix of the original “sinking” that Wotts released in late 2024. Though the two versions remain similar at their core, with many of the same elements, the new version moves away from the twangy country instrumentation present in the first “sinking.” In “sinking II,” Wotts steps into a heavier, more electronic sound, showcasing their dynamic talent and ability to re-craft a song while strengthening their artistic vision.
Reverb-ed, overlapping synths open the song along with barely discernible background vocals echoing across the arrangement. Tapping percussion in the intro turns into a huge beat once the verse begins, offering a satisfying launch into the song. Otherworldly sonics dance across the arrangement as well, adding unique and disorienting ear candy that keeps the listener hooked on every moment.
The chorus is full of catchy melodies, and some of the lines before the chorus are reminiscent of the melody of the childhood song “Ring Around the Rosie.” That melody is matched with a light bell sound as well, adding to the nostalgic feel. One of the lyrics in this nursery rhyme exclaims “we all fall down!” which is also present in Wotts’ chorus: “that’s the way that we all go, all go, that’s the way, guess we all fall down.” This adds a youthful naivety to the realization in this song that growing up means losing people you love.
