“Artifacts: Live From Newcastle Civic Centre” by Emma Miller is a one of a kind, five song EP that features live performances of all the songs from the EP she released in October of 2024. These five tracks were captured live on video in a cinematic, one-shot performance. The performance takes place at the Newcastle Civic Center and shows Miller moving through different rooms and hallways of the space as she travels through the songs one by one. The lack of cuts provides a certain intimacy to the songs, like we are traveling side by side with Miller as she takes us through these riveting performances.
Each of the songs are fairly sparse in terms of production, allowing Miller’s warm, captivating vocals to pull you in while the lyrics shine. Compelling narratives vulnerably explores self-reflection, relationship tension, and core values, asking questions like “who am I?” in “Sick & Tired” and singing “you wonder what it means” in “Outside.” Both of these tracks feature emotional piano rippling across the soundscape as Miller’s voice lilts overtop the arrangement.
In the closing track of the EP, “Run,” after exploring many conflicting emotions, Miller regains her center as she reconnects to her roots. She sings “here in the home of my mother and father, they brought me back, the truth of the matter,” poignantly reminding herself that she always has a place to run when life becomes too much. These themes hit you directly in the heart, telling you to never forget where you came from, and to seek comfort there when you need it.
