“Aftershocks“ by Joy and the Wildfire

“Aftershocks” by Joy and the Wildfire is a rock album full of compelling narratives and riveting instrumentation. This New York based band is made up of singer-songwriter Samantha Joy Pearlman, Jared Decker on drums, Sean Decker on bass, and Meghan Doyle on guitar. Their artistic chemistry shines in each arrangement on this album, and the live feel of these tracks adds a certain energy that keeps you hooked from start to finish. “Aftershocks” covers themes of introspection, relationships, and growth, offering comfort and catharsis to all of those feeling a little lost and unsure.

The album opens with the title track, “Aftershocks,” which was written about a life shattering breakup. The central metaphor of the song compares this breakup to an earthquake that left the couple broken. Lyrics like “the ground shook beneath our feet” and “tracing the fault line that leads to a rift drawn between us” poignantly express how deeply a breakup can rock your world. Though most of the first half of the song feels like a steady rock tune, the production builds and builds into a hugely chaotic arrangement with a whining electric guitar solo, unrelenting drums, and layered belted vocals. The line “we may not survive” is repeated several times, driving home the inevitable and painful end of this relationship.

Another standout song from this body of work is the closing track, “Back to You.” Walking piano, bouncing drums, and uplifting production contrast the lyrics about being unable to stop going back to someone who might not be good for you. A long and captving horn solo carries you through the end of the song, showcasing the dynamic sounds of Joy and the Wildfire.
