“Fall and What Comes After” by Marco Ragozza is a vulnerable body of work that draws on acoustic instrumentation and rock style arrangements to craft captivating soundscapes, on top of which the compelling narratives shine. Ragozza, an Italian singer-songwriter based in London, explores themes of depression and dark thoughts, but weaves in messages of hopes and perspectives of joy to add an uplifting feeling that ties the album together.
Two of the standout tracks on the album are “Fall” and “What Comes After,” cleverly placed next to each other in the track list to mirror the title of the album. “Fall” is a riveting track filled with plucked acoustic guitars, ominous bass lines, and a thumping rhythm. It follows Ragozza going to a dark place, singing “lose my sense of balance as I fall, why can’t I fly?” Though the second verse is more hopeful, this theme of being unable to escape a fall into rock bottom is intriguing, and unfortunately relatable to a lot of us. When we’re going through a rough time, it can feel like we are endlessly falling, with gravity acting as our unbeatable enemy.
“What Comes After” shifts the mood a bit, offering an emotional and dynamic sonic journey. Ragozza sings “I should’ve thought of what comes after the fall,” and later says he wants to learn what comes after the fall. This seems to be a change in perspective, born out of the realization that a “fall” can’t last forever. Eventually you hit the bottom, and then there’s nowhere to go but up. A riveting electric guitar solo soars across the song, and the impassioned vocal inspires hope in every listener.
