“The Girl Says She’s Fine” by Gregory Bratton is a fun rock song with a dynamic sonic journey and compelling narrative. Bratton is a passionate and innovative artist, and his multifaceted talent shines with this track. In this song, as well as Bratton’s entire album “Love Like an Arcade,” he plays every instrument and self-produced the entire body of work. The care and time he put into this song is palpable in every guitar whine, drum hit, and catchy melody.
This track walks through the comical situation of a girl saying “I’m fine,” and her boyfriend trying and failing to see the undertones of this statement. “I’m fine” is commonly known to mean “I’m not fine, and you should know why” in relationships, and this amusing play on that trope makes the song a good time. The narrator sings “she says ‘it’s fine’ like it’s not on her mind,” but he can clearly see that “fire burns inside her eyes.” He’s just a “simple guy,” though, and feels bewildered over what to do.
Riveting electric guitars provide both strumming rhythm and dancing riffs as heavy drums lay the backbone of the song. Playful melodies meander through the track, pulling your ear through the shifts in energy, and layered harmonies add ear candy textures to the song. The bridge features the punch line of the song, where the narrator tentatively says “hey babe, is now a bad time to tell you my mom is coming over?” This clueless question adds to the story, making you laugh and roll your eyes.
