“Arak Zachlawi” by OiTaTé is a one of a kind indie rock tune that blends different styles and cultures in a satisfying way, offering a dynamic sonic journey across a riveting arrangement. OiTaTé, which translates to “Oh Sweet Father in Heaven” in Yiddish, is a three piece trio from Tel Aviv that works to merge traditional Middle Eastern music with contemporary jazz and rock and roll, working in even more other styles that they find along the way. OiTaTé crafts instrumental landscapes that pull from many different styles and use eclectic melodies and rhythms. Electric guitar provides much of the main melody, dancing across the song and providing a performance that you can’t turn away from. The melodies are centered around the traditional scales in Middle Eastern music, which gives the song a captivating and slightly unpredictable feel. Tapping hi hats and a steady kick drum march through the track, and the walking bass is unrelenting and powerful. There are multiple, slightly contrasting rhythms that add tension to the track, pulling your ear in a multitude of satisfying ways.

Slight shifts in energy move the track from uplifting to ominous, from groovy to apprehensive. There are a few moments where the steady rhythms drop out, moving to singular drum and instrumental hits that build anticipation for the full arrangement to come back in. OiTaTé has a clear understanding of how to craft a compelling instrumental track, and their musical chemistry with each other is palpable in the interplay of each part.
