“HIGHER LOVE” by Official Shannon is a moving gospel EP that is sure to pull at your emotions. Official Shannon is a rising artist from London who blends soulful vocals, pop melodies, and acoustic instrumentals to craft gorgeous ballads that draw you in and don’t let you go. This body of work is Official Shannon’s debut EP, and it is the perfect introduction to her one of a kind artistry. These songs were made in collaboration with the Independent Musicians Collective, and the title track was even performed live on BBC.
In the first track of the EP, “His Eye Is On The Sparrow,” Official Shannon asks many “why” questions like “why should my heart feel lonely?” The drawn out notes on “why” vulnerably display her desperation. The performance builds and builds as the song goes on and Official Shannon finds peace within herself and her relationship with religion, eventually saying “I know He watches over me” and “I sing because I’m happy and I sing because I’m free.”
Most of the songs on the EP are built primarily by piano and vocal, sometimes offering layered vocals reminiscent of a choir, or slightly denser instrumentation. But even the sparsest tracks never get boring because of Official Shannon’s compelling vocals. Raw emotion is palpable in every moment of every line as meandering melodies dance and surprising riffs give you chills. The title track has more pop production, with a heavy beat and snapping rhythm supporting the ear candy melodies that sing of finding that transcendent “higher love.”
